Boardmaker 7 Student Center is an app that brings personalized visuals and symbol-supported educational materials home. Assigned activities appear automatically in the learner’s account and can use custom settings for eye gaze, switch, mouse and touch.

Biggest Hurdle

Halfway through the project, it was determined that the Student Center would support acapela voices under the Text to Speech setting. Including this meant I had to go back and revisit the UI and workflow for the Text to Speech setting.

The biggest challenge around this was trying to integrate it into the UI and not overwhelm or make the experience confusing. As a standard practice, acapela voices are not automatically downloaded to a user's machine. This is mostly in part because it takes up a lot of space. The challenge was making it obvious to the user how to access the list of voices, download it, and then apply it to their settings.

The solution we found was instead of trying to combine the acapela list with the default list of voices, we keep it in its own pop-up that is accessible from the default list of voices. Now when a user goes to select a voice, they will first see the default list accompanied by a button that opens the acapela list. This helps to keep everything acapela related in its own area. This was crucial since we allow users to manage their list of downloaded voices and remove them.
