TD Updater is a new tool introduced to Boardmaker 7 Editor and Student Center to improve the user experience of updating an application. This application has the power to automatically check for updates and download them in the background, notify users of available updates, and repair an application. With its simple design, the application integrates seamlessly across all supported platforms (macOS, Windows, and Linux).
During the early stages of design, the project requirement to support other teams were removed so that the team could focus on making TD Updater address updating pain points with two products in particular: Boardmaker 7 Editor and Boardmaker 7 Student Center.
In addition, project requirements were being questioned which led to a discovery period. The team struggled to determine if anything update-related is handled in TD Updater, or if updates should be notified and initiated by the user within Boardmaker 7 Editor or Student Center. During this period, I created both workflows and conducted A/B Testing to determine which workflow our users preferred.
At the end of discovery, it was determined that our users preferred the hybrid approach. This led to minor changes in the design but added additional work.
