TD Updater is a new tool introduced to Boardmaker 7 Editor and Student Center to improve the user experience of updating an application. This application has the power to automatically check for updates and download them in the background, notify users of available updates, and repair an application. With its simple design, the application integrates seamlessly across all supported platforms (macOS, Windows, and Linux).
After the discovery phase, I had to revisit the mockups to adjust the workflow to accommodate the hybrid approach we tested. Integrating update notifications into Boardmaker 7 Editor was an easy task to complete since similar pop-ups and workflows were already integrated into the application.
The biggest challenge I faced was integrating notifications in the Student Center. With the product having a wide range of users with different access methods, it added more limitations on what I could do. The biggest limitation I faced was not using pop-ups since they are not accessible for certain access methods, like eye-gaze.
The solution I came up with was handling all notifications in the Settings. This area is widely only discoverable by a caregiver/teacher/parent so a child doesn't easily find it (which is desired), and keeps a similar workflow to Boardmaker 7 Editor as much as possible.
